Barna's anime corner

Post by Barnahadnagy on Tue Dec 29, 2015 2:39 am

Since we have a fair few anime fans around here, I wanted to make a topic like this for sometime, where people can post anime recommendations / debates and stuff. Tho its "anime" its really not meant to be limited to that, so VNs, manga, LNs etcetc go too. With our activity this might just end up with me being posting a few recommendations overtime, but whatever. Also remember to put spoilery stuff in spoiler brackets.

Since I made these two recommendations recently (on skype and TS), lets re-post those here to start off.

Saya no Uta

Saya no Uta is a visual novel written by Gen Urobochi (Madoka and fate/Zero come to mind), and I consider this to be a masterpiece. Granted this is as 18+ as it gets, for a variety of reasons, but there really is more to it than that. Its fairly short, and has 2 choices (branching into 3 routes, one early on, I recommend doing all three). The story itself, without much spoilers, is about a guy who has serious mental problems, and tries to cope with everyday life. He encounters a beautiful girl, and their relationship develops from there.
A bit of a warning here, its not for the weak. This one can be quite hard on your mind. So be prepared.
Minor spoiler about content:
Spoiler:
I could compare it to Lord of the Flies, as far as gore levels go.
VNDB
DL (YARR!)

Henjo

To completely break the name, this is a manga so no animes to start off with. I really like this one. You can call it borderline porn. It really is. But the characters are great, and the story is OK. Its about a perverted girl who ... harrases one of her colleagues, in a wide variety of ways. It really is hilarious. At the moment it is rather short, but it is worth to check out.

SOURCE / DIRECT

So thats it for today, I hope there is at least one guy in this clan who a) likes anime b) reads the forum. *Weeaboos away on a flying mech piloted by a cute trap*

Are you reading or playing visual novels? Cause this question I ask myself since Great Japanese Invasion on Steam in 2014.

Well... That kinda depends. In the case of Saya no Uta, I'd go with "read", since you have a whopping 2 decisions, and its plain text otherwise. There are the kinds where you have sort of minigames and such, those are arguable. And there are some that are obviously more of a game than a book.

But this is why I love the genre. Its a book, an anime, a manga, and a game at the same time.

Lately I've been reading Majikoi, and that has much more decisions plus a sort of "girl choosing" part. I'd still "read" it (And I've been reading it since May, so its not exactly short).

About steam: I find it funny that Nekopara is the best seller, as that is basically porn, but its censored on Steam (How does it work even?). You see, lots of VNs have H scenes, but they are not usually important. I still like my VNs uncensored (even tho I usually just skip over those parts), as sometimes important things can be removed too. Like with Saya no Uta. About 95% of the VN would be censored. G-Senjou also has a fair few lines / scenes that add to the story.

Some Steam VN fails in every part.

By creating "unofficial" patch that returns the porn part. Steam has rules on what games can be sold and VN are soo on the gray line, people dont know what to do with them. IMO some of them have game part so bad (worse than bad rats) that they should be removed.

Anyway, its quite hard to review them because throwing away 15 euro for 5 pages of book is too much even for me.

Well, Im not anime/manga expert or fan, so I should not speak about my opinion, cause I will be biased.
So for all 3 VN that my brother forced me to play I can say: Run, fucking run away from Sunrider. It failed in story part and game part. Laggy, unfair, stupid, wannabe mass effect. With only one choice, that what will fuck you in ass anyway.

Analogue: A Hate Story and Hate Plus were another VN that I was forced to. They try not to be another "press next to continue" VN. Anyway, they were meh good, not the best one, but good.

Last thing, since January I'm reading one manga. If Im right with this slang, it is more Ecchi than Hentai. It has snake, bird, fish, horse, spider (it-makes-sense-in-context) and it is a funny comedy.  Razz

I have not read / played any of those, but A Hate Story / sequels-prequels are on my to-read list.

If you create unofficial patches... dunno, why don't you get the original version? I'd also not pay this money, but hey! Pirate life!

There are the ones, the more classical ones, that are 50+ hours long. Like G-Senjou (more about this sometime), Grisaia, or Majikoi (I really am reading this since May, I put at least 80 hours into it and it still has content, then again I usually play each and every route in VNs).

Would that manga be the one with this certain snek?

Maybe? Appleliar

Analogue are quite unique VN, as i already wrote, you are not reading and pushing right arrow. You are more like the main hero and you are reading emails, stories and have more influence in story. There is one part in first VN that I dislike, even managed to make glitch that forced me to restart from beginning. I wont give away what happened cause you want to play/read it.

Sounds about what I'd expect. I actually have the R18 installer for like 6 months.

If you are afraid of 'MERICAN interventions and such you probably should stay away from Saya no Uta. Far-far away. That would surely get you under surveillance.

Then why am I explaining it to you???? Rarity why

Sometimes I forgot how different are cultures in west and east. Half the things that are taboo, are ""meh.. it happens" for Japan.

Anyway, did you check whole steam VN list? I have feelings that it is more dumping ground.

Yes. It does have a few ones I know. And it has lots and lots that seem to be very mediocre. And hey! I only have the installer! I have been too lazy to actually read / play / fap it.

My one guilty pleasure anime/manga. Also, Nekopara has plenty of normal stuff, why there's a whole two sane characters!
